Eni’s first exploration well in Abu Dhabi’s Offshore Block 2 Exploration Concession delivered 1.5 – 2 TSCF of raw gas in situ, according to early data.
The finding is the first from Abu Dhabi’s offshore exploration concessions, and it illustrates the efficiency of ADNOC’s fast exploration and development strategy, as well as its complete approach to strategic partnerships.
The accomplishment follows the previously announced finding of up to 1 BBOE in the Onshore Block 4 Exploration Concession.
Eni’s first exploration well in Abu Dhabi’s Offshore Block 2 Exploration Concession showed early results suggesting 1.5 to 2 trillion standard cubic feet (TSCF) of raw gas in situ.
This is the first discovery produced from Abu Dhabi’s offshore exploration concessions, showing ADNOC’s continuous success with block bid rounds and its expanded approach to strategic partnerships. A consortium led by Eni and PTT Exploration and Production Public Company Limited (PTTEP) was given the exploration rights for Offshore Block 2 in 2019 as part of ADNOC’s first competitive block bid procedure.
Your Eminence “The discovery of significant natural gas resources in Offshore Block 2 demonstrates how ADNOC’s expanded approach to strategic partnerships enables us to accelerate the exploration and development of Abu Dhabi’s untapped hydrocarbon resources and create long-term value for the UAE, in accordance with the Leadership’s wise directives,” said Dr. Sultan Ahmed Al Jaber, Minister of Industry and Advanced Technology and ADNOC Managing Director and Group CEO. To our valued partners, Eni and PTTEP, we express our congratulations on this accomplishment, and we anticipate continuing our collaboration with all of our strategic partners to responsibly release Abu Dhabi’s hydrocarbon resources and stay ahead of the world’s growing demand for lower-carbon energy.”
Offshore Block 2 encompasses 4,033 square kilometres and is located northwest of Abu Dhabi. The finding of the block was made possible by fresh insights gathered from the world’s biggest combined onshore and offshore three-dimensional (3D) mega seismic investigation, which is presently being undertaken in Abu Dhabi.
“The positive interim results recorded by our partners, Eni and PTTEP, in the exploration of Offshore Block 2 follow the recent significant discovery in Onshore Block 4, highlighting the ongoing success of ADNOC’s accelerated exploration and development programme,” said Yaser Saeed Almazrouei, ADNOC Upstream Executive Director. It is important to note that both discoveries are based on ideas from ADNOC’s ongoing 3D mega seismic survey, highlighting the survey’s critical role in revealing new hydrocarbon resources in the Abu Dhabi region for us and our key partners.”
Drilling activities in Offshore Block 2 continue to penetrate deeper formations in order to completely unlock the resource volume and further study the block’s immense potential, as well as the exploration concession areas provided to Eni and PTTEP in Offshore Blocks 1 and 3.
This milestone follows the announcement in December 2021 of the finding of up to 1 billion barrels of oil equivalent (BBOE) in the INPEX/JODCO-controlled Onshore Block 4 Exploration Concession.
ADNOC launched Abu Dhabi’s first and second competitive block bid rounds in 2018 and 2019, respectively, on behalf of the Government of Abu Dhabi, offering a number of major onshore and offshore blocks to global corporations. Estimates based on current data from comprehensive petroleum system studies, seismic surveys, and exploration and appraisal well data indicate that the blocks contain billions of barrels of oil and trillions of cubic feet of natural gas.
